The Swedish forest will see two race spices this summer at the Rally For Classic rally Cars the Rally to the Midnight Sun www.midnattssolsrallyt.com
The very first turbo-powered rallycars SAAB built for WRC rallying was back in 1978. The car model made its debut in the 1978 RAC Rally in United Kingdom. The two Saabs one black one white started in Birmingham with Stig Blomqvist and Per Eklund.
This was the very first start for Turbo Saabs. Stig manage to win one of the stages before retiring soon after that Per also retired. Later in the 1979 Swedish Rally SAAB with Stig Blomquist won and SAAB wrote history being the very first Turbo powered car to win a WRC rally.
SaabsUnited Historic Rally Team has after 3 consecutive years in the www.midnattsolsrallyt.com
with a SAAB 96 Monte Carlo V4 1966 started the recreation of the two original 99 Turbos. The fact that they are CombiCoupes or Hatchbacks that makes them unique SAAB later only competed with the sedan versions of the 99 model. But due to FIA regulations on Homologations Saab had to make them as CombiCoupes since that was the only model had sold the first years. But SAAB has competed with odd cars before like in the Monte Carlo Rally in the beginning of the 60ies when SAAB only had 4 speed gearboxes on the 95 Stationwagon. So Erik Carlsson entered with such a model.
We are now in the final stages of building the two cars and have a few days ago got Vladimir Antonov from Russia as the driver of the white car. His co-driver the very experienced Denis Giraduet from France. Antonovs interest for SAAB and the companys future is well established. The team is now ready for this years rally, more spectacular than ever.
